Bonnie Lucas
N is for Nice
Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at 17ESSEX, N is for Nice explores a range of subjects relating to femininity, motherhood, gender, and childhood. These recurring concerns span the length of the artist's forty-five-year practice, during which she has engaged in a range of media including drawing, painting, collage, and assemblage.
Coming into artistic maturity at the height of the second-wave feminist movement in New York, Lucas was inspired by figures like Shulamith Firestone, establishing a body of work that turns around the trials and absurdities of gender constructs. In a time when the sociopolitical status of women finds itself in a state of heightened precariousness, Lucas' enduring focus on the trappings of femininity feels more timely than ever.
